Gambit Assists in Testing APC’s Inventory Power Management Offering

Nashua, NH – April 23, 2001 Gambit Communications announced today that American Power Conversion (NASDAQ: APCC), a global leader in end-to-end availability enhancement solutions, has utilized the MIMIC™ Simulator for its development and test environment for APC’s innovative PowerChuteÒ Inventory Manager software.

“Without MIMIC, it would have been extremely difficult and costly to make the level of scalability claims that we do with the new offering of our inventory management software,” said Kevin Brown, Software Group Director, APC.  “We were very pleased with the MIMIC simulator’s capability to imitate a large network testing base for our developers to observe and test our software.”

APC’s PowerChute Inventory Manager provides enterprise-wide management of APC UPSs, allowing IT Managers to automatically capture, organize and assess vital information concerning their APC power infrastructure.  Many of APC’s customers have thousands of APC UPSs installed – the PowerChute Inventory Manager was designed to accommodate these large installations, offering administrators the ability to proactively maintain up to 10,000 APC UPS systems on their network.

To validate the PowerChute Inventory Manager’s capabilities in these installations, APC turned to Gambit Communications’ MIMIC Simulator.  MIMIC simulated large networks of APC devices that developers and testers could use, saving them the time of setting up large equipment labs and test networks.

The MIMIC Simulator was used to “record” the device MIBs for the APC product set, including the APC SNMP Software Agent and the Web/SNMP Management Card. The web card provides APC’s customers with the ability to manage, configure and control their power protection devices via SNMP, Telnet or even HTTP protocols.  MIMIC was then used to simulate the devices and Web cards.  Simulation scenarios were created with thousands of devices – mirroring a typical customer’s enterprise – and the claim of managing 10,000 devices was substantiated.

“We evaluated other simulators, and MIMIC met our needs for testing this first of its kind UPS management offering,“ said Brad Hammond, Software Program Manager for PowerChute Inventory Manager from APC.  “Specifically, MIMIC supported the scalability requirements we had and it allowed us to test multiple operating systems including Linux, providing a comprehensive evaluation of the environments our customers are implementing.  Most importantly, the thorough testing process helps make the installation of our product easy for our customers.”
